Neonchrome Coming to PS4 Later This Year

Hello again, Playstation.Blog readers! As some of you may remember, 10tons was among the first indie studios to launch games on PS4. We are very excited to start revealing the new games we’re working on, specifically targeted for consoles from the ground up. First up is Neonchrome, a fast-paced, top-down, cyberpunk shooter.

Neonchrome

In addition to being the game’s title, Neonchrome is also the name of an arcology built by the Rooswahl Industries in 2085 as a home to more than a quarter million people. Arcologies are gigantic structures providing space for residential, commercial, and agricultural facilities.

Neonchrome also hosts its own fusion reactor, along with closed loop recycling system. All this makes the titanic structure mostly self-sufficient.

The arcology is controlled by an entity called the Overseer. The Rooswahl corporation is secretive about the nature of the Overseer and the details are known only to the highest level executives. While the mega corporation has always strictly denied it, some say the Overseer is a general purpose Artificial Intelligence which were banned after the Tampere incident in 2078.

NeonchromeNeonchrome

Taking place inside the titular arcology, Neonchrome sets the player on a mission to delve deep into the arcology to uncover secrets and save the mega structure and its inhabitants from certain doom. This is done by blasting through large amounts of corporate security, assault drones, and dangerous cyborgs. Neonchrome features intense sci-fi shootouts and devastating futuristic special abilities like plasma grenades and conversion rays. The game blends both procedurally generated and hand-crafted environments, including epic boss battles.

Neonchrome hits PS4 later this year.

Hustle Kings Out Today on PS4, Free to Play

$

0

Hustle Kings is coming to PS4 today! The best thing about this new iteration of Hustle Kings is that it’s now free to play for all; PlayStation Plus membership is not needed for online play. This means that with the core package, all PS4 owners will be able to jump online and take on the world in 1v1 games and tournaments.

Hustle Kings

The core package comes with a healthy amount of content including Trophy support, a training mode, career, and the online league. The league is built around our in-game currency, HKC (Hustle King Credits) which can be won and lost on games — the more games you win, the more you earn and the higher you can go in the league tiers.

There are lots of ways to earn HKC in the game. New players will be given a welcome bonus, there is a new daily challenge every day where you get 5 chances to win big in a unique puzzle or trick shot game, you’ll earn small amounts as you play by potting balls and pulling off tough shots, and when you run out we’ll be sure to give you a booster the following day.

For players who don’t want to have to earn and spend HKC to play, we also offer a separate upgrade package where with a one-time purchase you can play local offline games and challenge other players with the upgrade package to private online games, no HKC needed. This will allow you to spend your HKC on other things like a fancy new cue or ball set.

Hustle Kings

Hustle Kings has been slowly launching across the world. It’s been out in Europe for a little while now and since its release there have been more than 12 million balls potted, cue balls have travelled a combined distance of more than 39 million metres, and there has been a combined table time of more than 4,300 days! We can’t wait to see this explode once you get your hands on it.

We’ll be launching new content regularly; new game types, new items, new features, and more — so stick around and let us know what you want to see.

Enjoy!

Ratchet & Clank on PS4: Where Past and Future Meet

$

Hey everyone. We know Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac Games, and PlayStation fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of Ratchet & Clank for PS4. We’re excited to bring you that first look today — ahead of its playable debut on the showfloor of E3 next week.

In this trailer, you’ll see a few glimpses of footage from the film, and then your first-ever look at gameplay footage directly from the game coming exclusively to PS4 in Spring 2016. Check it out.

We knew early on that we didn’t want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2. We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank on PS4 as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story (as seen in the film). We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 games while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.

We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more… all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4. Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning.

The fresh start means we changed up the arsenal quite a bit as well. As always with Ratchet & Clank games, you battle your enemies with an out-of-this-world arsenal. In the PS4 version of Ratchet & Clank, the majority of the arsenal is made up of weapons that weren’t in the original game. That means both new weapons and fan-favorite tools of destruction from the Ratchet & Clank Future series will fill out Ratchet’s kit. From the brand new Pixelizer (which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels) to franchise favorites like the dance-party-inducing Groovitron and wise-cracking robotic bodyguard Mr. Zurkon, Ratchet & Clank’s arsenal has never been better.

Ratchet & Clank

When we were asked recently to come up for a special bonus for fans that support Ratchet & Clank on PS4 by pre-ordering it, we went back to the list of our favorite weapons that we hadn’t yet brought to the game. In the end, it was a no-brainer, and I’m ecstatic to say that when you pre-order the game, you’ll get access to one of my all-time favorite weapons from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando… The Bouncer. The Bouncer launches a bomb that releases a plethora of tiny homing bombs that bounce towards targets. One of the most effective and spectacular Ratchet & Clank weapons ever.

We couldn’t be more excited to debut Ratchet & Clank on PS4 and the silver screen next Spring. Help Ratchet and Clank save the galaxy for the first time, again!

If you have questions, we’ll do our best to answer them in the comments below.

Resogun: 6/10 Update

The Anti-Gravity Racing Championship’s most famous Ships have arrived in Resogun. Utilize the Feisar, Piranha, Auricom, AG Sys, and Qirex crafts to take the fight to the Sentients.

Each ship has been specifically modelled to represent its Classic Wipeout look and feature custom attribute set ups to reflect their strengths in speed and weaponry.

These ships are perfect for fans of Wipeout and Resogun alike, and we’re proud to add the Wipeout Ships to the ever growing roster of Resogun craft.

Ships are available today from PlayStation Store priced at $1.49 individually or $3.99 as a bundle.

Resogun: 6/10 Update

Finally we’re pleased to announce that the next three Human Packs are available today. Each pack features 2 different Human types that normally only unlock on specific days of the year but are being made available here for the collector types.

Human Packs 3, 4 and 5 will be available today on PlayStation Store and are priced at $0.99 each.

All content announced today will be available to download for all season pass owners. If you’ve not purchased the Resogun season pass then there really has never been a better time. Priced at a bargain $7.99 it includes all content released today as well as the Heroes and Defenders expansions and all previously released Human Packs.

Hellblade: New Gameplay Trailer Follows a Struggling Warrior

Hello, Dominic here from Ninja Theory. Today I’m happy to be sharing a new Hellblade trailer with you. In it, we show Hellblade gameplay for the first time, as well as give a deeper insight into the game’s story and world than we ever have before.

Hellblade launches next year on PS4 and tells the story of Celtic Warrior Senua and her journey into Hell. The Hell in question is no ordinary Hell, but is in fact a Hell that is the manifestation of Senua’s mental illness. Senua experiences psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions, as well as suffering from anxiety and depression. As a player you will witness Senua’s living nightmare through her own eyes.

From George Orwell’s 1984, to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, the best fantasy breaks down barriers and lets us see the world without prejudice. This is what we want to do with Hellblade. To see the world through Senua’s eyes, and in doing so, address a subject that is still considered taboo.

Developing Hellblade independently gives us the freedom to tackle a subject as challenging as mental health. It is a subject that we are handling with all the respect it deserves, ensuring that our portrayal of Senua’s condition is both accurate and sensitive.

HellbladeHellblade

To help us with this we are working closely with Professor Paul Fletcher, a professor of Health Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, as well as arranging to consult directly with people who have experience of mental health difficulties. We are also very proud to say that Hellblade is being supported by Wellcome Trust, which is a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science and in particular health.

Hellblade is being developed by a small team of 15 people under a new development model that we are calling Independent AAA. The idea behind this is that we can create a game independently, with creative freedom, but still deliver AAA quality production values. As part of this we’re creating the game openly, sharing as much of the development process as possible. You can follow Hellblade’s journey at Hellblade.com and via the Ninja Theory social channels.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture Comes to PS4 August 11th, 2015

The world ended 31 years ago. That’s the premise of Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and we’re delighted to be able to announce the game’s launch date – August 11th, 2015.

To celebrate this, we’ve launched this dedicated website for the game, which will feature exclusive content – images, music and writing created just for the site. We want to set the scene for this game, introduce you to characters and themes of the story, get you exclusive previews of the game’s soundtrack and fill you in on some more of the work that’s gone on to create the title. We also wanted to share another piece of music from the game’s gorgeous soundtrack:

There’s going to be a lot more news about Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture coming out between now and launch, including a development diary which lifts the hood on how we got from the first ideas to this game we’ve poured heart and soul into over the last three years; another mini-documentary and lots more. But don’t worry – the mystery of what happened in Yaughton valley thirty-one years ago will remain buried in the empty fields and woods for you to discover.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is the culmination of journey Jess and I started back in 2006, when we asked the simple question “what happens if you remove traditional mechanics from a game world? Will that be something people will want to play?”

Everybody's Gone to the RaptureEverybody's Gone to the Rapture

The answer to that question, the last nine years have proved, is a pretty emphatic YES. Dear Esther stood on the shoulders of giants, drawing on the long, proud design history of first-person gaming, to just try side-stepping into an area we believed was worth exploring. We look back now at the number of story-driven, exploration-driven games that have been produced since and that’s an incredible thing to be part of. We stand alongside studios and developers who are committed to pushing at the boundaries of what games can be, and that’s being part of a tradition as old as gaming itself. This medium has always been about those boundaries, that pushing out, that bending and breaking of rules to do new things, and we hope Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture will earn its place in that.

Personally, back in 1984 I was eleven years old, and obsessed with my ZX Spectrum. By then, I’d made a couple of games for myself, including a procedural cave shooter – it wasn’t much, but it worked, and being able to create something in this amazing space was about as cool as life got. If you’d told me then that one day I’d be squaring up to launching a game like Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, I don’t think I could have believed it. But I know that the same giddy rush of excitement has never left me. Like Kate, one of the astronomers at the heart of Rapture’s story puts it – “my hands are shaking. I’m like a little kid.”

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

Jess & I are really lucky to have an amazing team working on this project and they’ve done an outstanding job. It’s been an incredible game to work on and we hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed making it.

There are strange voices on the television and numbers on the phone; lights in the skies and electricity in the air. The end of the world is coming.

Life Goes On: Done to Death Coming to PS4

We at Infinite Monkeys Entertainment are incredibly excited to announce two things today. The first: we are expanding Life Goes On with brand new content and features. The second: PlayStation gamers can pick up Life Goes On: Done to Death later this year on PS4.

For those new to the game, Life Goes On: Done to Death is a comically-morbid platformer where you use your character’s dead bodies to solve puzzles. On your quest to find the Cup of Life, you will sacrifice knight after knight to make your way through a trap-ridden world.

The gameplay of Life Goes On follows from a simple idea: what if dying didn’t mean game over? Instead, each time your heroic knight dies, a new knight is summoned to continue on, leaving a dead body behind. By summoning knight after knight, you make progress through a level by pressing buttons, springing traps, and manipulating dead bodies to serve as tools for the next hero.

Life Goes On: Done to Death on PS4Life Goes On: Done to Death on PS4

Since the initial release of Life Goes On, we’ve been excited to expand the game further. We have created a bright new world filled with strange mechanisms and deadly new traps. For example, we’ve decided that we aren’t done with the knights even after they die. In Life Goes On: Done to Death you will face the bodies from your former lives as they walk around the level, attacking your player, and stumbling into traps.

We’ve always had fun with Life Goes On — sacrificing your characters over and over is a dark concept. But by making it as ridiculous as possible, it turns into something funny. Done to Death builds on this by delivering more morbid comedy and more opportunities for players to mistreat the knights in horrible and unique ways.

Life Goes On: Done to Death on PS4

It’s thrilling to have Life Goes On: Done to Death on PS4. Platform games work best on a console and using a controller has always been the most satisfying way to play Life Goes On. The game has been running amazingly on PS4, and we’re confident that players will be impressed. It’s been lots of fun playing with the features of DualShock 4, like playing the knight’s death cries through the speaker and creating custom rumble effects for each way a knight can die.

We can’t wait to get Life Goes On: Done to Death into players’ hands, and we think you’ll really enjoy the experience. Watch for the game to land later this year. We’d love to hear your comments and thoughts below!

Cinematic Shooter Astebreed Coming to PS4 June 25th

Hey everyone! Nayan here for Playism. We’re all busy with a ton of projects, but one thing we’re always hard at work on is bringing amazing Japanese indie games to western shores, and what I’m here to show you today is one such title.

Astebreed on PS4

Originally released on PC, Astebreed is a shoot-em-up with a cinematic twist: once you climb into your mechanized warmachine, you’ll be screaming through every environment shooting lasers and missiles at everything around you. While all this chaos is going on, the in-game camera seamlessly swoops around you, changing the game from side scrolling shoot-em-up to vertical and more.

You’re never quite sure what’s coming next.

Astebreed will launch as a digital download on PS4 June 25th for $19.99.

Standing on the Edge of Oblivion

In Astebreed, your warmachine has access to two powerful weapons: the thought-controlled Lucis system, and a large sword capable of cutting through anything.

Astebreed on PS4Astebreed on PS4

The Lucis system is a swarm of nodes that float around your mech, firing lasers. You can either rapidly press the fire button to fire lasers in a straight line, or lock onto enemies and command your Lucis nodes to close in and deal serious damage. While Lucis nodes are locked on a target, however, your available firepower decreases. It’s a good thing you have that sword.

The blade you’re equipped with is not just large, it’s incredibly fast. At close range, you’ll be able to slice enemies open with blindingly fast swipes, ending encounters almost instantly. Using these two unique weapons in tandem is the key to survival (and a high score, of course).

Bringing the War to PS4

When Astebreed developer Edelweiss decided they wanted to bring Astebreed to PS4, they looked at it as a chance to revisit the game and add aspects to the game that they weren’t able to do with the original version. It was also a chance to take advantage of what PS4 has to offer.

Astebreed on PS4

Graphically, the PS4 version of Astebreed has gotten a facelift. It now runs at a solid 60 frames per second at 1080p, and with no screen tearing, thanks to Vsync. The team is also utilizing emissive lighting and improved texture compression, and upping the quality of the 3D models and textures just for the PS4 version.

That isn’t the only addition we’re bringing to Astebreed on PS4! We’ve added a bunch of new upgrades to your mech, including the ability to control the direction of your focused targeting system using the right stick, and the ability to instantly dash. We’ve also adjusted enemy patterns and placement, and created a new “Arrange Mode” in addition to the initial version’s “Original Mode.”

We’re super pumped to bring Astebreed to PS4 in North America, and we can’t wait all of you to get your hands on it on the 25th.

Street Fighter V: New Battle System Details

Hey everyone, we got some pretty hype Street Fighter V news today! Nope, it’s not a new character, but rather information on something that will affect all characters: the battle system. For SFV, we’re excited to talk about the new Variable System!

The V-System consists of three variable mechanics all built around the new V-Gauge, which primarily builds as your character takes damage. The three mechanics are: V-Skill, V-Trigger and V-Reversal.

Street Fighter V on PS4

V-Skill

V-Skills are unique skills per character that can be accessed at any time by pressing medium punch and medium kick together. These skills do not require use of the V-Gauge and have different uses per character (e.g. mobility, offensive, defensive). V-Skills are rather important in battle as they may help a character in an area they’re weak at or help to fill up the V-Gauge quicker. Learning how to properly and efficiently use each character’s V-Skill will be key in winning matches.

V-Trigger

V-Triggers are unique abilities per character that can only be activated once the V-Gauge is full, by pressing heavy punch and heavy kick together. V-Triggers, much like Ultras in Street Fighter IV, are a way for your character to turn the tide of battle. That, however, is where the similarities end. Activating the V-Trigger, which allows access to a character’s full potential, is merely step one. It is completely up to the player to properly utilize the benefits received from the V-Trigger to change the course of the match. As V-Triggers add quite a bit of depth to each character, mastering their use will be paramount to victory.

V-Reversals

V-Reversals take up one stock of V-Gauge, and allow a player to counter the attack of the opponent while blocking, thus creating some breathing room. They are similar to “Alpha counters” from the Street Fighter Alpha series, but this time not every counter results in a universal effect; some push the opponent back, some knock them down and some switch sides. Players should explore each character to see how their V-Reversals function.

EX Gauge

That’s not all, however, as there is also the EX Gauge, which builds as you deal damage to the opponent. The EX Gauge allows characters to perform powered up versions of their special attacks and when maxed out, their Critical Art. Critical Arts are highly damaging, cinematic attacks that are unique to each character.

V-Skill & V-Trigger Breakdown for Current Characters

Street Fighter V on PS4

Ryu

V-Skill : Mind’s Eye

Ryu uses his senses to “see” the opponent’s next attack and parries it accordingly. All attacks (high, low, mid) and projectiles can be parried if timed correctly. Multi hitting attacks can also be parried with the correct timing. Fans of Street Fighter III will remember that the “parry” was the core battle mechanic of that entire series! The mechanic now returns as a single V-Skill of Ryu, demonstrating how serious we are about making every character unique to one another.

V-Trigger: Denjin Renki

Ryu powers up and enters Denjin Renki mode. In this mode, his normal and EX Hadokens, as well as his Shinkuu Hadoken gain an electric charge, resulting in faster travel speed, higher damage, and higher stun. While in this mode, normal and EX Hadokens can also be charged, which result in even higher damage or a guard break if blocked. Additionally, his Shoryuken attack also deals additional damage when it connects against the opponent.

*Note – Denjin Renki mode only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

Street Fighter V on PS4

Chun-Li

V-Skill: Rankyaku

Chun-Li kicks powerfully off the ground and flies toward her opponent at an angle lower than her normal jump. While in the air, Chun-Li can use air attacks and special moves as she descends upon the opponent.

V-Trigger: Renkiko

Chun-Li concentrates her ki into her hands and feet which results in attacks hitting more times than normal. Light attacks have no additional benefits, medium attacks hit one extra time, heavy attacks hit two extra times. This benefit is not extended to special attacks.

*Note – Renkiko only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

Street Fighter V on PS4

Nash

V-Skill: Bullet Clear

Nash reaches out and absorbs any normal projectile coming his way. If close enough to the opponent, Nash can absorb their life force, causing damage.

V-Trigger: Sonic Move

Nash travels at supersonic speed and ends in one of three different places near the opponent based on what the player inputs. Players can choose to end up behind the opponent on the ground, behind the opponent in the air, or in front of the opponent in the air, and can act immediately once Nash appears.

Street Fighter V on PS4

M.Bison

V-Skill: Psycho Reflect

M.Bison uses his Psycho Power to absorb any normal projectile or attack coming his way. If the player continues to hold down the Psycho Reflect after absorbing either the projectile or attack, M.Bison will throw a Psycho Shot back at the opponent.

V-Trigger: Psycho Power

M.Bison completely unleashes his Psycho Power, which results in a change to his dash and certain special attacks. He now teleports during his dash, able to pass through projectiles and attacks, and also disappears and reappears during his Somersault Skull Diver and Double Knee Press attacks, making them extremely hard to track.

*Note – Psycho Power only lasts a short amount of time and is tied to a timer.

So there you have it, the new Variable System for SFV. Although V-Skills and V-Triggers are easy to use, they will definitely take time to master. And with the activation command tied to a simple set of button presses, players will now have more time to concentrate on what truly lies at the heart of Street Fighter: Rising Up against the competition!

I can’t wait for you all to get your hands on this. Until next time!

Wattam: A Peek Inside the Game World

Hey everyone! This is Robin & Keita — back to chat with you about our new title, Wattam, coming to PS4 next year.

Last time we posted, you got a brief glimpse into the life of the Mayor of Wattam — a happy-go-lucky green cube with a spectacular bomb under its hat. Since then we have been working very hard on the game, anticipating the moment when we would share more with you. And a couple of weeks ago, we had our first hands-on demonstration of Wattam at a small event in Los Angeles.

We were so nervous.

But the response has been lovely! People immediately took to Wattam’s joyful, silly, and exploratory nature. And since then, fans have been peppering us with questions about the game, what it’s about, and how it works. So without giving too much away… here is a little Q&A about the strange and wonderful game we are making for you:

Wattam

What in the heck is going on?

It’s an epic story which we won’t spoil here, but after a series of unfortunate events, there was a gigantic explosion which spread the people of Wattam all across the galaxy. As a result of this crazy BOOM, only a few people, a few pieces of world, and the Mayor are left when you begin the game.

What is the point of this crazy game?

Your task is to help the Mayor and Deputies bring all the people and places of Wattam back together again.

How on earth do you bring Wattam back together again?

By climbing, stacking, and chaining groups of people! Once you have a big collection, you can detonate it using the Mayor and Deputies. This will attract people who are hanging out in space, searching for their long lost home. There will be several worlds to unlock, starting with the 4 Seasons. The world you are seeing in these screenshots is Spring.

HangingOut

Explode to attract people and grow the world? That’s insane!

It is a bit strange — this idea of making a big BOOM in order to bring people closer together… but these explosions will be so stunning that *anyone* would want to get a closer look. By building crazy chains and stacks, and then blowing them up, you will fill the sky with joy. This is what unlocks new people, new levels and eventually new worlds to play in.

Is connecting people… fun?

But of course! First of all, connecting people lets you experiment with the physics of the world in interesting and silly ways. Second — you can see how their special actions (moves like “Grow” or “Bounce” or “Party”) interact. Last but not least, each character has a unique riff that they contribute to a larger melody mashup when they connect. So you actually create the musical landscape of the Wattam as you play. F-f-fresh!

So… what makes Wattam challenging?

Each world has a series of characters that are hidden or asleep. To discover them and wake them up, you will need to experiment with combinations of people. A good example is the Flower people — who start off as sleeping sprouts until you rain on them with the Cloud. A lot of the game will progress in this fashion. There are also special “boss” characters, who are hard to connect with. But we will talk more about that next time…

Wattam

Anything else?

Yes! You will be able to play the game all the way through on your own – but you can also play with friends and family, while sitting on the couch together. This means you can work collectively to achieve Wattam’s goals and unlock the story — or just spend time running around, building crazy shapes and exploding to your heart’s content.

Wow – that’s a lot to take in, huh? Well don’t just take our word for it — check out the second part of the Mayor’s strange and wonderful story, which includes actual game footage! Or better yet, come see us at the IndieCade booth (South Hall # 601) next week at E3! We will have some fun surprises for those of you who make the trip. See you… BOOM!

The teams at independent developer Flying Wild Hog and raucous game label Devolver Digital are thrilled to announce Shadow Warrior 2, the full throttle sequel to offbeat first-person shooter Shadow Warrior. Battle alone or partner up in four-player co-op to experience the frenzied swordplay and explosive shootouts in the procedurally generated world of Shadow Warrior 2 — coming to PS4 next year!

Five years have passed since Lo Wang shattered the alliance between his deceitful former boss and the ancient gods of the shadow realm. Despite noble intentions, Lo Wang’s efforts to annihilate the darkness corrupted the world, creating a strange and savage new order where humans and demons live side by side.

The once feared warrior now lives in the shifting wildlands outside the reach of his enemies and the neon glow of Zilla’s cybernetic metropolis, scratching out a meager existence as a hired sword for the local Yakuza clans. When a simple mission goes wrong, Lo Wang is drawn into a volatile conflict between a brilliant young scientist, a controversial cult leader, and a terrifying new drug known as Shade. The sharp-tongued hero must once again wield lethal blades, staggering firepower, and archaic magic to purge the world of evil.

Shadow Warrior 2

Additionally, PlayStation fans can grab the original Shadow Warrior on PSN at a sweet ninja discount from now through E3 to get familiar with the series’ exquisite katana-based combat and chaotic gunfights.

Shadow Warrior 2 will be available to demo via appointment only at E3 2015 with the first look at gameplay debuting live on Twitch.TV Monday, June 15th at 12:30 PM Pacific.

Shadow Warrior 2 is set to launch on PS4 in 2016, or whenever Lo Wang damn well pleases.

Explore a Lush and Mysterious Ocean World in Giant Squid’s ABZÛ

It’s been a year since we first revealed ABZÛ on PS4 at the PlayStation 2014 E3 Press Conference. Since then, the talented team at Giant Squid and I have been hard at work designing this unique and atmospheric adventure. We’ve got some new information to share about ABZÛ, and we are very excited to be giving players their first hands-on demo at the PlayStation E3 booth next week!

ABZÛ

ABZÛ roughly translates to “The Ocean of Wisdom” from old Sumerian. This ancient, mythic concept is central to the narrative of our game: a universal story told purely through imagery and sound. You play as a lone diver who descends deeper and deeper into the sea, searching for her true purpose. Encounters with majestic creatures await and forgotten secrets lie hidden in dense kelp forests, sparkling reefs, and the murky abyss.

Although the game is greatly inspired by our experiences scuba diving, there is no air gauge in ABZÛ. We want nothing to get in the way of delivering a powerful sense of awe when players discover the mysterious ocean environments that we have created – so we allow the diver to explore and linger in these underwater realms without limitation.

Developing a deep connection with the sea life you find is a core aspect of ABZÛ. The diver can reach out and touch fish, allowing her to school and ride with them. We have designed these interactions and their emergent consequences with the goal of creating respectful and meaningful ways to commune with creatures. All of the species featured in ABZÛ are based on real animals from around the world. We have created a dynamic ocean ecosystem which simulates tens of thousands of fish, procedurally schooling and darting through the water, reacting to each other and the diver. There is a real sense of magic when swimming gracefully with a school of giant trevally and catching a ride on the back of a playful manta ray, or the fin of a majestic blue whale.

ABZÛABZÛ

The concept of fluidity is central to Giant Squid’s approach to game design. It manifests in every element of the project, from the controls and animation to the highest level of game flow. When you play, it is immediately apparent that we allow the diver to pitch freely in the water. The ability to swim smoothly in complete loops gives a sense of weightlessness and freedom very unlike swimming control schemes in most other games. There is no game over state that forces the player to restart an area, as that would break the continuity of the story’s timeline. By focusing on fluidity throughout the design, we hope to create a completely immersive experience and a vivid world that players may lose themselves in.

Music in ABZÛ also plays a critical role in delivering emotion and narrative. Composed by our good friend Austin Wintory who I’ve worked with before on the game Journey, the score evolves with the player experience – rather than focusing just on the area the player is in. Our process is very collaborative: the art inspires the music and the music equally inspires the art in each step of development. This ensures a harmony of visuals and sound that gives the world of ABZÛ its unique atmosphere and identity.

We will be at E3 2015 showing ABZÛ at the PlayStation booth. If you’re around, be sure to come check it out or tune in to the PlayStation Live Cast on June 18th! I’ll be stopping by to talk more about ABZÛ!
