Armello Coming to PS4, Inspired by Tabletop Games

Writing this post, the first thing that comes to mind is when myself and the other directors at LoG first came together and decided to set about making the best digital board game the world had ever seen. Seems crazy, now that I think about it. But we were always afflicted by a particularly blinding optimism.

Armello on PS4

Even still, I would never have imagined that game would show so much promise and have such a following that four years later I’d be here telling the world that Armello would be coming to PS4. We never were that optimistic.

However, today is that day. I can proudly announce that Armello will be coming to PS4 in September this year.

Set in a vibrant magical world with a tinge of darkness, our game, Armello, is a multiplayer digital board game that thrusts players into a Game of Thrones-esque struggle for power. You’ll select one of eight unique Heroes from the animal clans of Armello, and compete for the crown while the mad lion king terrorizes the Kingdom from the seeming safety of his Royal Palace.

Armello on PS4

Heroes start in their clan grounds and use action points to traverse the board. Each hex tile presents different consequences including mysterious encounters, exploring a dungeon, capturing a town for your clan or improving a Hero’s health. Players won’t just be battling each other as they move across the board on their quest for the crown though, horrifying Banes stalk the land and terrorize the local populace, and the King’s Guards aren’t unfamiliar with slaying a guard or two in the name of the ‘law’. Atop all this, you’ll have an arsenal of over 100 fully animated cards at your disposal.

After our successful Kickstarter campaign and a solid stint on Early Access, Armello’s community has helped us hone the game into the unique, polished and deeply thoughtful experience it is today. However, we’ve also been secretly working away on a PlayStation version of Armello that uses every inch of the console, with brand new high end assets, redesigned UI, and controls specifically designed to ensure feels right at home on PS4.

Armello on PS4

Oh, and the game already features an incredible soundtrack by Michael Allen and internationally acclaimed composer Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator, Baraka, Dead Can Dance).

Inspired by the classic adventure films and tabletop games of the eighties and nineties, the stuff we were raised on, Armello really is tabletop adventure brought to life.

If you like strategy, card, board or role-playing games, we can’t wait to put a PS4 controller in your hands and show you Armello on PS4, the first truly digital board game.

See you in Armello!

As a title from Idea Factory, the same company that brought you the acclaimed Hakuoki series, Norn9: Var Commons is definitely worth waiting for. Norn9: Var Commons will be available in the fall, but in the meantime, I’ll give you a little sneak peek.

While on a school field trip, child prodigy Sorata Suzuhara wanders off after hearing a mysterious song and blacks out. When he comes to, he finds himself in unfamiliar place, and soon encounters a girl who informs him that he’s currently in turn of the century Japan.

In order to help him get home, Sorata follows her to a ship that she’s waiting for but when it appears it is not a wooden sailing ship, but a round aircraft that flies using technology that is beyond Sorata’s imagination. Even stranger, he discovers that the other 12 passengers — 3 young women and 9 men — are all supposedly espers with special powers, and are on some kind of journey at the behest of a multinational entity only known as The World.

Norn9: Var CommonsNorn9: Var Commons

What is the purpose of their journey? What is their destination? Who is The World? Before Sorata can even begin to take stock of his situation, the ship is attacked, and the mystery surrounding the ship only deepens. Delve into the story of the ship and its occupants through the point of views of each of the three girls, and unravel the mysteries trapped within.

Experience the voyage! Board a mysterious aircraft and go on a journey with twelve young men and women with special powers. While travelling to an unknown destination, you will view beautifully detailed environments.

The characters in Norn9: Var Commons come to life. No completely static images, here! Communicate with them as a part of their world and see how they react to specific situations. As the player, YOU advance the complex, diverging storyline and decide the fate of the characters. Ultimately, you will be making some of the hardest decisions. Introducing Extreme Exorcism on PS4, PS3

Hello, I’m Mike Christatos; President of Golden Ruby Games. We’re a two-man development studio based in New York and we’re developing Extreme Exorcism on PS4. I’m also pleased to announce, for the first time ever, that we’re working on a PS3 version as well!

Spawned from our love of hardcore arcade games from the days of gaming past, Extreme Exorcism is a paranormal platformer, where every move you make comes back to haunt you. Mae Barrons is an Extreme Exorcist with extreme methods. She’s called upon to rid a haunted house of its ghostly presence, when everything and everyone else has failed.

Haunted by the spirits of lost lives and high scores, we took the classic arena shooter and added a twist. Instead of adding enemies that get harder over time, you’ll be forced to fight past versions of yourself, which spawn as ghosts at the beginning of each round. With this added threat, 50 challenges and a robust multiplayer mode, we expect Extreme Exorcism to be a scary good time for you and your friends.

The ghost mechanic was created temporarily as placeholder enemy AI. Initially a quick fix, we realized that when players are forced to fight against themselves, they actually face more of a challenge. Giving everyone infinite ammo and a one hit one kill, it’s up to you to not only survive for as long as possible, but to try and remember every action you performed in the previous rounds.

Extreme ExorcismExtreme Exorcism

Being a small, two-person studio, time is precious. So with help from an artist, sound designer, and UI creator — and of course our publisher Ripstone — we were able to focus on the gameplay and classic arcade challenge we wanted to create.

To further the gameplay of hunting ghost versions of yourself, we added challenge and multiplayer modes to amplify the chaos. In challenge mode, you’ll be tasked with completing 50 different challenges that really lean hard into the chaotic nature of Extreme Exorcism. And if you think it’s hard to memorize a multitude of ghost movements from yourself, try adding three of your friends in the mix and remembering what they did, too. If that’s too crazy, challenge your couchmates to a 4v4 game of deathmatch, where the last man standing is the winner.

The Death and Darkness in What Remains of Edith Finch

    $
    0
    0

As you may have seen, earlier this week we debuted a new trailer for What Remains of Edith Finch, a new PS4-exclusive adventure from the same team that brought you the enigmatic The Unfinished Swan on PS3.

The game follows the titular character as she returns to her remote rural family home to unravel the mysteries of her forebears. It’s essentially a compendium of short stories, each focusing on a different member of the Finch clan and built around a distinct gameplay mechanic.

    What Remains of Edith Finch

As a big fan of The Unfinished Swan, I caught up with the game’s Creative Director Ian Dallas to delve a little deeper into his vision for the game. And duly, I learned enough to peg Edith Finch as one of the most intriguing prospects in 2016 for PS4.

Read on to find out more, but to cut to the chase, any game that channels Edgar Allen Poe, Dark Souls, This American Life, and Twin Peaks, all tied up in a nice, heavy existential bow, has to be worth keeping an eye on, right?

What DNA does Edith Finch share with The Unfinished Swan, both in terms of its gameplay and its approach to storytelling?

Ian Dallas: Both games are about exploring the unknown. In The Unfinished Swan the unknown was more concrete — a white landscape you uncovered by splatting it — whereas in What Remains of Edith Finch it’s more about the mystery of why all of your family members have died and the murky nature of stories, where you never know the full truth — just one person’s perspective on it.

From a mechanics standpoint, both games also make an effort to constantly change up what the player is doing to help keep things interesting and also put players in the mindset of these characters. As a player you’re discovering new gameplay mechanics in the same way that the characters are discovering new worlds.

What Remains of Edith FinchWhat Remains of Edith Finch

What are your cultural touchpoints with Edith Finch? Edgar Allen Poe? Roald Dahl? Brothers Grimm? Stanley Kubrick?

Ian Dallas: The genre of short stories people call ‘weird fiction’ has been the biggest source of inspiration for us. That includes well-known folks like Poe, Lovecraft, Borges, and Neil Gaiman — along with some new favorites like Lord Dunsany, Jean Ray, and Kelly Link.

Other big influences for us include One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, Ugetsu, and with anything I do I’m sure there’s a bit of Alice in Wonderland in there somewhere.

Edith appears very human and vulnerable — she’s unarmed, she’s got no special powers. She defies traditional video game archetypes, which is obviously refreshing, but how do you sell that to the player and make her a heroine they want to inhabit?

Ian Dallas: Edith is a meant to be a bit of a mystery for players. It’s not so much a question of getting people to root for her as simply wanting to know what’s going to happen next in this world.

In keeping with our focus on the unknown, there’s a lot that isn’t clear about Edith at the beginning. We know she’s coming back to this house but we don’t know why. Like with the stories you find in the game for each family member, Edith’s own story is a deliberate construction and there are things she’s choosing to focus on or leave out.

We’ve got two very different worlds in the game, the Finch family house Edith is exploring and the more surreal, stylized world of the stories where each is meant to reflect the personality and emotional state of the family member that story is focused on. We’ve tried to make Edith feel vulnerable and familiar to give players a stable point of view on this pretty bizarre universe.

Thematically, the notion of “family” seems very central to what the game is about. How personal is this story to you? Are you pulling on your own experiences in any way?

Ian Dallas: My mother was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer mid-way through making The Unfinished Swan and she died during the first year of developing What Remains of Edith Finch, so that’s definitely part of why there’s a heavy focus on families in both of those games.

I’ve always been interested in death and impermanence, and I think families are a good contrast with that — something we make that lives on after we’re gone.

The stories in the game are all relatively short, contained experiences, so shifting the focus to the family also helps us look at how these events play out in a larger context and explore the themes we’re interested in.

    What Remains of Edith Finch

And what of the house itself? Is it a familiar place to you? Did you grow up somewhere like it?

Ian Dallas: The Finch house and the stories within the game are based around Orcas Island in Washington state, which is a place my family visited a lot when I was growing up. And we’re definitely trying to capture the balance of a limited human presence surrounded by a large, untouched wilderness that you can still find on the island today.

The Finch house is nothing like the house I grew up in, which is a good thing. The Finches aren’t very stable people and their house reflects that — it’s an enormous jumble of architectural styles and, like most houses in games or movies, wildly impractical. But I did spend my entire childhood, more or less, in the same house and I think that’s reflected in the way we approach the Finch house.

It’s a place where you can feel the weight of many people making small adjustments to it over a long period, imprinting themselves and their concerns on the landscape around them.

I hear you’re a big fan of the This American Life podcast, and that its approach to thematic, short-form storytelling has influenced your work. Can you expand?

Ian Dallas: I love the intimacy of radio journalism. On a show like This American Life you can have a soundscape of people digging a subway tunnel a mile underground paired with an old Jamaican man talking about what that kind of work does to your joints, and as a listener I’m able to keep both of those things in my head at once.

It’s a very artificial world, made up entirely of sounds, but it feels strangely real. I think in stripping away so many of the things that we’d normally be focused on, it’s easier to appreciate the unique character of what’s left – like the person’s voice.

On The Unfinished Swan we used mostly non-professional voice actors because they sound more natural and I think it’s easier to connect with them emotionally. They’re not acting; they’re just being themselves. And we’ve done the same thing so far on What Remains of Edith Finch.

It’s very hard to make anything in games feel intimate and human but non-professional voice-over actors have worked really well for us so far and I think that echoes some of the feel of a show like This American Life.

While it’s not overt, there’s clearly a ‘horror’ element to the game. How hard is it to scare someone, and how do you measure success during development?

Ian Dallas: Our intent has never been to scare anyone. I’d say it’s more about creating a sense of curiosity and unease. Which is not to say the game isn’t scary for many people. It comes down to how you as a person deal with the unknown. And this is a game that hopefully gives you a chance to explore that feeling.

It’s a hard thing to measure in a playtest. It’s much easier to measure the opposite — what are the things that break the sense of mystery, or empathy, or immersion? And every time we do a playtest, we find lots of those problems and do our best to fix them.

Personally, the thing I’m always looking for is a moment in the game when most people will be so overcome that they’ll subconsciously let out a “woah.” You don’t always hit that, obviously, but that’s the goal.

What Remains of Edith FinchWhat Remains of Edith Finch

It’s fair to say that Edith Finch and Unfinished Swan are not “typical” video games. There’s not much out there that’s like them. What’s your relationship with games? Do you play a lot?

Ian Dallas: I play fewer games than I used to and I think that’s a combination of lack of time, the fact that most games feel quite familiar by now, and the sense that most games don’t have much to say to me.

I think most games are either meant to be challenging or to be a pleasant time waster. And a lot of people are looking for that, but I’m not. For me personally, I love games that show me something I haven’t seen before and that effectively explore a character, environment, or feeling.

The last game I got really into was Dark Souls, which was not a game I was expecting to enjoy. I think that game does a fantastic job of conveying a sense of struggle. I love how inscrutable the world is, how vast and unknowable it feels. For me, the thing that makes Dark Souls so compelling is how unified it feels, that all the various elements – the lighting, the economy, the lengthy attack animations – all contribute to this feeling of heaviness and struggle.

Another theme appears to be the trivial, temporary nature of humanity versus the infinite vastness of nature. That sounds a pretty heavy topic for a piece of interactive entertainment! Can you promise us a happy ending?

Ian Dallas: Eventually, everybody is going to die, right? The most we can hope for is an interesting life and a satisfying conclusion. And I think that’s what players can expect from Edith Finch and the rest of her family. It’s definitely going to be interesting.

Looking for the PS Plus lineup? Well, you’ve come to the right place, friends. Please take off your shoes and stay awhile…

This month, the lineup includes four games you can play on PS4. And we’re starting off big with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes on PS4. The latest chapter in the renowned Metal Gear series sends Big Boss into a high-security Cuban military base on a daring rescue mission. Use new stealth techniques along with Snake’s iconic repertoire to infiltrate the base (and perhaps mess around with enemy soldiers along the way).

Also on PS4 is Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition, a turn-based strategy game with a twist: your army is undead! Undead samurai, to be exact. Build up your forces and conquer all to reclaim your honor!

As mentioned above, both PS Vita games in the lineup are also available on PS4. That’s right, you can play Super Exploding Zoo and Futuridium EP Deluxe on PS Vita and PS4. And rounding out our list is Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Cloudberry Kingdom on PS3.

These games will be free for PS Plus members starting on June 2nd. If you prefer watching videos instead of reading, hit the play button below to see the full lineup.

Nom Nom Galaxy: 10 Tips for a Successful Soup Empire

    $

    0

We’ve seen a lot of people enjoying Nom Nom Galaxy since its launch on PS4 earlier this month so we thought we’d share a few of our tastiest, top tips. For those new to the title, hopefully it shows a little more of what the game is all about!

As one of SoupCo’s loyal Astroworkers, you’ll help to expand its soup empire across the whole galaxy by harvesting a planet’s ingredients and wildlife to make delicious soup. Two Astroworkers can play together in couch co-op or you can form a team of up to four online!

Once you make it through the handy tutorials, you’ll be given all the basic structures you need to set up your own basic soup factories, but as you conquer the market on more and more planets you’ll build up a huge array of buildings, weapons, vehicles, and robots which will allow you to create the huge automated mega-factories of your dreams.

1.) You Can Harvest Baddies Like Veggies

Robots like “Arthur” can attack dangerous creatures for you and then the other robots can collect the tasty ingredients they leave behind!

2.) Warp Gates Are the Shortest Distance Between Two Points

A pair of Warp Gates allow you to teleport back and forth. It’s a great way to explore vast landscapes, hurry back quickly when your factory is under attack, or transport large quantities of ingredients from further areas.

Warping yourself around the map comes at a cost, however your robot workers can throw ingredients into a warp gate for free, just waiting to be received by your robot minions
    on the other side!

3.) Plants Have Needs, Some Have Benefits

Flora and fauna differ on each planet, and many plants have unique properties to discover; Sunflowers won’t grow in the shade, Mushrooms only grow in caves, and Grass will naturally grow almost anywhere with ease. If you eat aquatic Brineweed (the red seaweed), it will replenish your Oxygen and help extend long underwater expeditions!

    Nom Nom GalaxyNom Nom Galaxy

    4.) Chewing Gum?

Galactic Gums are awarded to you regularly and can do a number of cool things! Chew some “Oxy Breeze” Gum and your Astroworker will fart out Oxygen as he moves. Chomp on some “Boulder Bash” and you can punch through normally impenetrable solid rock!

    5.) Conveyors and Escalators

Automating your soup factory means less work for you. Conveyors can be placed next to escalators to carry ingredients and soup cans.

    6.) Power Management

Your factory needs power to keep it operational. All the components of your base need to be connected to keep the energy flowing. Metal girders and vertical struts can also transfer power around your factory!

    7.) The Air We Breathe

You can only explore so far as your oxygen supply takes you. Fortunately getting near an Oxygen Flower can re-supply you. When an Oxygen Flower grows tall you can punch to harvest it and plant two more anywhere you like!

    Nom Nom Galaxy

    8.) Soup Machines

These machines are the core of your factory, turning harvested ingredients to soup. You’ll notice a green radar on the soup machines, it points towards nearby ingredients!

    9.) Combat

You have to defend your base and fight creatures to convert them into tasty ingredients. There’s an assortment of weapons in the game, but if going in fists only, why not hold “Up + Attack” to unleash a powerful DRAGON PUNCH! This move can also lead to air juggles!

10.) Your Boss Robo-Sacho is in the Know

Each planet on your galactic soup building conquest presents a unique set of challenges and secrets for you to discover. Robo-Sacho, on the start of your second day of work, will give you some insight into each planet’s secrets!

Our team of soup-pros at Double Eleven and Nom Nom players across the galaxy are finding new and interesting ways to export soup all the time. We’ll continue to publish the best tips, tricks, and epic factory pics @DoubleElevenLtd.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited Comes to PS4 in Two Weeks

We’re excited to welcome PS4 players to ESOTU in just two weeks. When we began development of the console version of the game, we knew we wanted it to feel like it was developed for the PS4, not just another port. With integrated voice chat, a completely redesigned UI, full PSN connectivity and controller support, PS4 players should feel right at home in Tamriel.

Today, we’d like to share some details (and some fun things, too!) to help you prepare for launch. Thank you for supporting us through this journey—we hope to see you in Tamriel on June 9th!

    This is ESOTU

Over the past few weeks, we’ve released the first two ‘This is The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited’ videos. In them, we delved into the freedom and choices that shape your experiences in Tamriel, and all of the activities you can enjoy in ESOTU with friends. Today, we’re pleased to present the final video in the series, all about exploration in Tamriel. You can watch all three videos, including the latest one, below. We hope you enjoy it!

    Launch Day Timing

On June 9th, everyone who has purchased The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will be able to log in at midnight, local time. This means that every hour, players from a new time zone will gain the access to play ESOTU on console, beginning with UTC+14.

    The Quick Chat System

At launch, the console versions of ESOTU will feature a Quick Chat system. This system will allow you to select from a collection of premade phrases to quickly communicate with other players around you. You set them to your shortcuts just like you would a consumable item. Once you’ve assigned the Quick Chat phrase to your shortcut wheel, you simply hold down Right on the D-Pad, then use the R-Stick to choose one.

When you use a Quick Chat phrase, it will appear as a text chat bubble, visible to those around you along with an emote. Below are a few screenshots of the Quick Chat system in action.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on PS4

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on PS4The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on PS4

You can have a total of eight Quick Chat phrases on your shortcut bar at a time. There are currently 22 Quick Chat phrases you can choose from, all of which are localized into English, French, and German. We do plan to add more over time, based upon the requests of the ESOTU community.

If you have any questions about ESOTU’s console launch or the plans leading up to it, please post them in the comments. We’ll do our best to answer!

Wander Coming to PS4 on June 4th

Greetings, amigos! This is Crystal here coming at you from not-so-sunny Melbourne, Australia to bring you the latest Wander update. The first bit of exciting news is (drumroll…) our release date! Those of you who are overcome with desire to explore the lush forests, beaches, and ocean of Wander will be thrilled to know that it launches on PS4 June 4th.

Next up is something we’re all pretty excited about, and that is our newest trailer! Featuring all four of the forms players can discover in the game — including the beautiful and agile hira, who is being introduced here officially for the very first time — as well as eye-popping shots of the vast and majestic scenery players can explore.

While we were at it, we’ve added a little bit of narration as well just for good measure. Feast your eyes on this, and get ready to wander!

Since our time is nearly at hand, we’ve been working hard to develop tons of awesome new features, such as polishing the griffin flying experience to a high-gloss sheen. Anyone who thinks flying will simply be a matter of just pressing a button to get from point A to point B is in for a pleasant surprise, as it will require a little bit of skill and practise to master.

Luckily, practicing flying is ridiculously fun, as I can’t think of too many things more satisfying than successfully locating and gliding towards a thermal to have it lift you triumphantly into the air! Just keep your eyes open for downdrafts or you could find yourself grounded, your triumph rapidly turning into a sad trombone noise.

Another thing we’ve come up with is a very cool idea for a menu system that doesn’t involve a menu at all! This non-menu will allow the player to manage the map, review their communication glyphs, and change into other forms they’ve found. On top of that, it looks fantastic, too!

Now, you all might be thinking: “Glyphs? What is a glyph and what does it have to do with me?” Well, my lovelies, if you want to communicate with other wanderers, it’s not simply a matter of walking up to them and introducing yourself. You’ve got to learn how, just like in real life! You could be talking to someone who speaks a completely different language than you do, after all.

    WanderWander

Thus, while traversing the rainforest you will come across stones that teach you how to draw symbols, which will allow you to speak to other players. This also makes use of the PS4 controller in a very cool and innovative way, by drawing symbols on the touch pad. So basically, the more you search, the more you can say! Do with this knowledge what you wish. You could become the most helpful person in Wander, using what you’ve learned to help new players find useful and interesting places, lorestones, etc. You could become a legend among wanderers. Or, you could just make some friends and then let them figure things out on their own. Your call.

Another cool new feature, for those who really want to take advantage of the vast environment available to them, is skydiving. If you’re a hira, you can request a ride from a griffin buddy by using the helpful new “hop on” feature, fly up as high as you can go, and then plummet spectacularly and gracefully to the ground. You can even land on a griffins back in mid-air, if you’re really talented. I know some of you will look at the floating island and your first thought will be that you’re dying to jump off of it. Well, you can, and in an artistic way, no less.

In addition to this, there is also a Wander PS4 theme! So, if you just can’t get enough of the glorious ambiance and rainforest sounds in the game (And let’s be honest, who can?), you’ll be able to enjoy it on your PlayStation dashboard as well.

    Wander

That’s it from me for now! If this little taste of what you will experience while immersing yourself in the world of Wander has got you intrigued, then be sure to get your hot little hands on a copy on June 4th.

For my friends on the southern hemisphere, what better way is there to deal with the gloom of winter than by escaping into a sunny, tropical paradise? And for the rest of you, where else can you be a tree, a sea creature, or a griffin?

New Competition Begins in Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

Hello PlayStation Vita fans. On behalf of the Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines team, I am excited to announce the in-game competition we are calling Wailer’s Way.

    Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

Starting today, May 28th, and running until June 10th, there will be a newly named labyrinth called Wailer’s Way which is a special area with the goal to kill as many Oni as possible, and to reach a minimum specified score. Winners will receive a bundle of in-game prizes, so join in! All of the eligibility details for Wailer’s Way can be found on this forum post.

Not to be outdone by the in-game competition, beginning on May 28th and running until June 3rd, we are holding a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of these awesome signed Oreshika art books. The books are signed by the creator of Oreshika, Shoji Masuda and the character designer, Makoto Sajima. For all the details on this sweepstakes please go to this forum post.

    Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

Our team in Europe caught up with the game designer, Shoji Masuda, to find out six things you might not know about Oreshika. We hope you enjoy the little bit of fun facts.

    1. How did Kōchin get her name?

Shoji Masuda: First, it comes from the English word “coach,” because she’s the character who coaches and guides players in the game. It also comes from the Chinese word for North Star. It’s fitting because the North Star doesn’t move and shines down on you, watching over you — much like how Kōchin watches over your clan as you go through multiple generations struggling against the curse placed upon them.

    2. Do you have a favorite “last words” from within the game?

Shoji Masuda: For Oreshika, over 800 departing words were created for the game and my favorite one is “our numbers rise, our numbers fall, it is nothing more than the way of the world.” Those words perfectly represent what I felt the first time I held my firstborn in my arms.

    3. What were some of the deciding factors in bringing the game to PS Vita?

Shoji Masuda: Oreshika is the type of game that you can pick up and play in a casual fashion — perfect for a handheld platform. Nowadays, people have an internet connection pretty much everywhere which allowed the dev team to add the function of players connecting their clans with other players’ clans and interacting with them wherever they happen to be.

    4. Any tips for mating with the gods of Oreshika?

Shoji Masuda: If you’re a hardcore player who is focused on maximizing your stats, you can choose gods strategically. You could also pick them based on visual appearance. If you like the way a certain god looks, you’ll want to integrate their features into your clan.

By picking gods based on visual characteristics, it might take you a bit longer to clear the game because you’re not hyper-focused on status parameters, but it wouldn’t stop you from having a good time!

    5. Kōchin moves a lot when sitting still. What brought about all of her animations?

Shoji Masuda: If it were a male character, we wouldn’t have been able to make as many actions as we did. The game character creator for Kōchin, basically fell in love with her as he was creating her. He just kept making more and more actions for her — he didn’t want her to be left alone.

    Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines

    6. Being able to see the loot prior to battle is unique. What inspired you to include that game mechanic?

Shoji Masuda: As you play this game, you have to think about future generations. In the game, your heredity — your character’s stats are passed on to the next generation. In the real world, a parent’s physical possessions and status in society are all passed down to children as well.

With that in mind, we wanted players to see, for example, that there may be an item that they won’t get in this generation, but maybe in the next, or maybe there’s a special item that is bequeathed to you by your parent, who also got it passed down from their parent. We wanted players to develop an affection and treasure the items that they have.

We’re excited to leave you with one more exciting announcement before we sign off… We’ve been listening to our fans and we are pleased to launch an Oreshika theme for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV, which will be available on the PlayStation Store on June 2nd!

And if you still haven’t downloaded Oreshika yet, the game is currently on sale on PlayStation Store for PS Plus members at $14.99 until June 1st.

Summer School Starts Tuesday: Class of Heroes 2G Comes to PS3

Just when you thought it was time to ditch the books and kick back for some lazy summer days, school will be starting right back up. The digital version of Class of Heroes 2G for the PlayStation 3 will be accepting new students June 2, 2015. This is one grid-based, dungeon crawling RPG master’s program you won’t want to miss because we have a launch trailer you get the exclusive first-look at:

Starting summer school at Crostini Academy of Adventuring Arts, your school in Class of Heroes 2G, you’ll realize this isn’t your typical place. You’re tests are epic boss monsters, your teachers will get you geared for a life-or-death battle in the labyrinth and your friends stick right by your side to level up.

In Class of Heroes 2G, there is a significant amount of brand-new content that RPG fans should be excited to start studying up on. Weather effects can alter the flow of battle, new maps are ripe to explore, HD graphics and bigger bosses to take down.

One new addition that is cooler than a neon colored trapper keeper (depending on your generation, you might need to look that up) is the North American exclusive feature that allows your PlayStation Vita to become a second screen and control most of the action. The constant access to menus, statuses and maps will put some adventurers at the top of their class.

This digital release marks the wide release of Class of Heroes 2G. A few months earlier, we fulfilled a very small request for physical printed boxed copies of the game that were marked with serialized holograms. It’s the only batch of physical games created so if you see one in the wild, it’s a rare sight indeed.

The digital version will be available to download on your PS3 via PlayStation Store for $44.99.

Welcome back to PlayStation Underground, our online show about video games! Today, we go underground with Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, a poignant exploration of the apocalypse, and a snapshot of 1980’s England. For those looking for an emotional, story-driven experience, look no further than this upcoming PS4 project.

I get mellow on the couch with The Chinese Room Studio Manager Tom Turner, who guides me through an empty — yet somehow idyllic — English town that is left in the wake of a catastrophic event.

Tom discusses the team’s passion for the project, the evocative script, and the incredible, dynamic score that adapts to each player’s experience through technical wizardry I dare not attempt.

Let me know what you think in the comments, and remember that we’ll be back soon with more Underground in the weeks to come. Enjoy the show.

The Dragon Apocalypse is Coming: An Update on EarthNight

    $

    0

Last year, we announced that EarthNight would be coming to PS4 and PS Vita. Today, I’m excited to share an update on what’s going on with the game and debut a new gameplay trailer. For the uninitiated, EarthNight is a hand-painted runner made to elevate the endless runner genre with console-quality depth and design. The unbelievably talented artist Mattahan paints every frame of every character, and every element of the game.

Each run begins in space. The player must traverse eight beautifully painted layers of the atmosphere, alternating between skydiving and running on the backs of dragons on the perilous journey down to Earth. Unlike other runner games, there is an end — the planet’s surface is the final world: EarthNight. You can learn the basic mechanics in a few minutes, but the game is hard to master. It takes time and dedication to develop the skills to reach EarthNight.

We are creating a game in which each run is unique but feels meticulously hand-designed, where the player always experiences something different while still recognizing patterns. To achieve this we’re using what we call “hand-designed procedural generation.” We’ve broken down each dragon (level) into three chunks: a beginning, middle and end. Each of these chunks has at least five hand-designed variations that spawn procedurally according to a set of rules. This means the most basic dragons have 125 different potential layout variations. The first world contains four different dragons and therefore offers 244 million potential seeds. By World 2, there are over 59 quadrillion seeds and the finished game will have about 6.93 x 10^39 possible seeds. Basically, no matter how many runs you take, your path to EarthNight will always be different.

Even though there are endless seeds, over time hand-designed pieces will become familiar. Recognizing patterns with so many seeds may sound impossible, but keep in mind that the first world only draws from 60 unique possible chunks (15 chunks for each of the 4 dragons.) The player will become acquainted with the first dragon pretty quickly since they begin with it every time. Additionally, each dragon’s chunks fit into a theme — for example, the blue dragon in the first world is pretty easy and a good opportunity to regain health, while the black dragon is absolutely brutal — so despite the layouts being random, your dragon selection has consequences.

We are honored that Doug Holder, who previously worked on Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us, has officially become the eighth member of the EarthNight team. We’d been looking for a special effects artist who could mesh well with Mattahan’s art style for a long time, and we really lucked out. Using shaders and particles, Doug is adding a whole new visual layer to the game. You can see his contributions on the crystal light energy dragon, the flames on Sydney’s dragon spirit, and all new trails on both characters. We look forward to more awesome visual effects from Doug.

I also want to give an update on the game’s music. Our composer, Chipocrite, recently released his latest album, Wordplay, with songs featuring Game Boy, guitar, drums and bass. (If you played EarthNight at E3 last year, you might recognize the track “Little Computer People” from World 1.) He is now fully focused on finishing our soundtrack, and so far it sounds amazing. The game will have chiptune-only versions of songs as well as full-band versions.

The other good news is we’ve finished transitioning to Unity 5. EarthNight is running at 60fps in 1080p on PS4, and it looks beautiful. The bad news is we’re pushing back the release date until late 2016. Rest assured, we are working as hard as we can to finish, but we all feel in our hearts that we have something special here and we need to finish what we started the right way. We are getting there, and I promise we will ship this game as soon as it’s ready.

If you have any questions, leave them in the comments — I’d be happy to answer them. Thanks for checking out EarthNight!

With our June update, the PlayStation Now subscription library will reach more than 125 titles tomorrow — that’s a lot to choose from!

Read on below for the games coming this month, but first some news on how quickly PS Now is expanding to your favorite devices.

As of today, the PS Now subscription is live on PS4, PS3, and select Sony TVs and Blu-ray players, and extending to PS Vita and PS TV in the coming months. We’ve also expanded our Canadian support of PS Now, and you can now enjoy both the PS Now subscription and rentals on all of the same platforms that are currently available in the US.

Also, here’s a cool tip you may not know about: if you’re already a PS Now subscriber, you can access your subscription titles through the PS Now rentals section of the PS Now app on PS Vita and PS TV. Just look for the games with a “Playable” label instead of a rental price, then click and play!

Another neat shortcut we’ve added: if you haven’t yet signed up for the free 7-day trial and started your subscription, you can now get it on the web here.

Here are this month’s new games!

    Puppeteer

One dark, moonlit night, a young boy named Kutaro was carried away by the maleficent Moon Bear King to a black castle where the unlucky lad was transformed into a puppet. Puppeteer is a brand new franchise developed exclusively for PS3 by SCE JAPAN Studio. Set in a magical puppeteer’s theatre, this title will introduce you to a strange and fantastic world, where the environment is constantly changing. Players will enjoy a rich, dark fairytale where surprises lurk around every corner.

    Braid

Braid is a puzzle-platformer, drawn in a painterly style, where the player manipulates the flow of time in strange and unusual ways. From a house in the city, journey to a series of worlds and solve puzzles to rescue an abducted princess. In each world, you have a different power to affect the way time behaves, and it is time’s strangeness that creates the puzzles. Braid treats your time and attention as precious; there is no filler in this game. Every puzzle shows you something new and interesting about the game world.

    PS Now: June 2015

    Way of the Samurai 3

The consequences of your actions will determine your fate. Choose to fight alongside good or evil during the tumultuous time of the Sengoku era and carve your name into history. Become a hero or become infamous, the choice is yours, in this series famous for its high level of freedom and giving players free rein over their own play style.

    Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2

You are the deadliest sniper in the elite Ghost Warrior unit. Positioned deep within enemy territory, deliver precision firepower across stunning real-world environments. Pull the trigger and test your skills in an epic story of intrigue and betrayal. One shot, one kill.

Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!

From the creative minds of Pendleton Ward (creator of the award-winning Adventure Time animated series) and game developer WayForward, the adventure begins with a completely new storyline staged in the Land of Ooo as players help Princess Bubblegum save the Candy Kingdom by exploring the mysteries surrounding a massive Secret Royal Dungeon. Play as multiple fan-favorite characters from the show including Finn, Jake, Marceline, Ice King, and more and showcase your best attack moves with special abilities and skills to defeat baddies throughout the dungeon.

We hope you enjoy playing June’s new additions! As always, more titles are on the way for next month, and if you haven’t caught up on the previously added games, you can view the list of all titles in the PS Now subscription right here.

    Until next time!
